A facial recognition system is a computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source. It is typically used in security systems and can be compared to other biometrics such as fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems.*
In a way, worship begins with facial recognition. The worship of God is the understanding and celebration of who he is and the face of God is Jesus Christ. When Philip, one of the disciples, wanted Jesus to show them Father God, Jesus said, “he who has seen me has seen the Father”. (John 14:9)
One of the most profound scripture passages in the Bible is Hebrews 1:1-3. It starts with God. (Let there be no mistake, everything starts with God.) God initiates all good things including life and salvation. The writer of Hebrews explains that Jesus Christ is “the radiance of His (God’s) glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.” (Hebrews 1:3)
When Philip asked to see God, he was looking at the face of God clothed in skin. Wow! I sure wish I was there! Imagine. That very God was standing in front of him.
Moses also had an amazing experience. In Exodus 34 we read of God’s instructions to Moses. After following these instructions, “the Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him (Moses) as he called upon the name of the Lord. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth; who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgressions and sin.” (Exodus 34:5-7) Moses recognized who was standing in front of him. The result is that Moses quickly “bowed and worshiped.” (Exodus 34:8)
We may not be standing in the physical presence of God but we have a promise that he is near. (Philippians 4:5) and that he is “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrew 13:8) so our response is to recognize who God is and to worship him.
Since God is with us in Spirit and we don’t see him with our physical eyes we look to scriptures to help us recognize who God is. We also see the evidence of God’s presence in the circumstances of life, as well as in his creation. In other words, we may not see him as Philip and Moses did, but see his fingerprints.
Daily, no matter what life brings, we worship creator God because we recognize him. Trust me, there is no one like Jesus Christ. He is unmistakable. You will know that he is with you when he brings comfort to your soul and when he supplies your every need.
Artists have tried to depict what Jesus looked like when he was clothed in flesh. Somehow, these pictures don’t do him justice. Through the scriptures, we know so much more about him than a painting can represent.
Whether singing songs in church or living our lives at work, school or home, we worship Jesus Christ because we recognize who he is. He is the Mighty God, the Savior of the World; Jesus Christ.
As we recognize him, let’s worship him.
